Chattanooga Wrestlers Win One At Virginia Duals

Friday, January 12, 2018
The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga wrestling team opened with a win before dropping its other two matches to ranked opponents at the Virginia Duals today.  The Mocs defeated Kent State 23-15, then lost to No. 11 Northern Iowa (33-7) and No. 20 Lock Haven (22-18).

Kent State brought an 8-4 overall record, including an impressive win over Virginia earlier in the season.  Junior Alonzo Allen set the tone with an 11-3 major decision over Jake Ferri at 125.  The Flashes answered with a 3-2 decision at 133, but senior Michael Pongracz responded with a 7-0 shutout over Tim Rooney at 149.

Kent State took the next two matches to go up 9-7 halfway through the dual.  That's when the Mocs seniors took over and posted four-straight wins.  Chad Pyke scored a decision at 165, followed by the same from Justin Lampe at 174.  Bryce Carr and Scottie Boykin, both ranked No. 15 at 184 and 197, shut the door with tech falls.

Freshman Torrez Finney made his UTC debut after joining the team from the football program.  He had to default after tweaking his knee and did not compete in the Northern Iowa match.

The Panthers won the first five matches to run out to a 20-0 lead in the afternoon bout.  Junior Chris Debien lost in overtime at 133, while Pongracz dropped a tough 5-2 match to No. 8 Josh Alber.

Pyke put the Mocs on the board with a major decision at 165 for his second win of the day.  Carr had another tough battle against No. 11 Drew Foster.  He lost this one 2-1 (TB1) in overtime, for his third loss to Lujan in OT or by a point in the last two years.  Boykin rounded out the Mocs' scoring with an 8-7 win against No. 19 Jacob Holschlag.

Lock Haven jumped out to a 6-0 lead with a pin at 125, but Debien put UTC on the board with a 10-4 win at 133.  Pongracz dropped a close one at 133 to Kyle Shoop (3-2), the first of four wins in a row for LHU.  Justin Lampe won at 174, and UTC nabbed forfeits at 197 and heavyweight to end the evening.

The Mocs are 4-5 overall and back in action tomorrow against Old Dominion.  Match time is set for 10:00 a.m. and live scoring and PPV video links are available on the wrestling schedule page on GoMocs.com.
